Sanskrit I: First Year College Sanskrit

Second Semester: January 16—April 23, 2020 (Thursdays) 6:15-8:45 p.m. EST
This course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students or motivated high school students desiring to learn the Sanskrit language, and for any others With a personal interest in Sanskrit and its literature. It provides a thorough presentation of Sanskrit grammar and introduces the student to Sanskrit prose, With an emphasis on reading and translation. No previous knowledge of the language is required.
The objective of the first semester course is to introduce the student to Sanskrit grammar, phonetics, and orthography, preparing her or him to enter a second-semester college Sanskrit course or the second semester course offered by Erasmus Academy (see below). The first semester course covers the same material as that covered in the first four Weeks of the summer intensive, but at a slower pace. The second semester is a continuation of the first semester. It provides a thorough presentation of the remainder of first year Sanskrit, including a larger number of readings from original sources. One semester of Sanskrit study, or the equivalent, is required to enroll in the second semester. The objective of the class is to bring the student to an intermediate reading level, preparing her or him to enter a second-year college Sanskrit course.
As a distance learning course, students may take this class from any location, including the convenience of their home. They Will need to have access to an internet connection. The course meets in “real time” and each student Will have the opportunity to participate fully in every class by listening, speaking, translating, and posing questions. Homework assignments may be emailed to the Instructor.
The courses meet once per Week (Thursdays) from 6:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. EST. These 2.5-hour sessions include interactive lessons on grammar, pronunciation, and the Writing system. In total, there are 37.5 hours of instruction each semester.
*Please note that the Week of November 24, 2019, class Will be held on Monday, November 25 from 6:15-8:45 p.m. PST. There Will be no class on Thursday, November 28. In the second semester there Will be no class the Week of April 5, 2020.
Required Textbook:Thomas Egenes, Introduction to Sanskrit Part I (first semester), and Part II (second semester).

Background of Instructor
Dr. Chiarucci received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught the intensive Sanskrit course the past four years.
1. Payment by Semester: Fall Semester: $725 one-time payment, or $75 non-refundable deposit and $650 balance by August 25, 2019. Spring Semester: $725 one-time payment, or $75 non-refundable deposit and $650 balance by January 10, 2020.
2. Early Bird Registration Option: If full payment for the two-semester course is made by August 15, 2019, the total payment for the year’s course is $1350.

Download the Enrollment Form, fill it out, scan it and return it as an email attachment to the Erasmus Academy email address indicated below.
If, after the first four weeks of live instruction, a student wishes to discontinue the Sanskrit course, a letter to this effect must be received by the Erasmus Academy Registrar’s Office by 4:00 pm, Oct. 3, 2019. The withdrawal deadline for the Spring Semester is February 13, 2020. Thereupon a refund of the course fee paid either for the semester or two-semester course, less $75, will be returned to the student.
